The History and Meaning of the Necktie

For nearly 50 years, Rooymans Neckwear has focused on one thing: designing and producing ties that blend style with meaning.
Over the decades, we’ve created thousands of ties for companies, institutions, associations, and cultural brands.
But the story of the necktie goes back much further than our own history. It’s an accessory with a rich past and that legacy still gives it power today.

MILITARY ORIGINS: FROM CROATIAN CRAVAT TO FRENCH FASHION PHENOMENON

The necktie traces its origins to the 17th century, when Croatian mercenaries wore brightly colored cloths around their necks as part of their uniforms.

French officers and noblemen were captivated by this “cravate,” leading to the first fashionable interpretations. King Louis XIV even made wearing a cravat mandatory at court, turning it into a true symbol of status and refinement.

From Aristocracy to Everyday Elegance

In the centuries that followed, the tie evolved into a symbol of elegance and sophistication. By around 1880, the English popularized the four-in-hand. A simple, longer tie that was easier to knot and wear. It became the direct predecessor of the modern necktie we know today.

THE RISE OF DESIGN: FROM FUNCTION TO EXPRESSION

During the 20th century, the tie became a canvas for self-expression. Wide ties with Art Deco patterns in the 1940s, skinny ties in the sixties, and bold colors in the eighties, every era brought its own character.
At Rooymans Neckwear, we follow trends but remain committed to timeless design. Our in-house design studio creates ties that rise above trends. Helping brands make their identity visible, down to the finest detail.

More Than Style: A Communication Tool for Organizations

A tie says something about who you are, and what you stand for.
That’s why so many organizations choose custom-made ties. We design club ties, trade fair ties, corporate ties, and branded neckwear that subtly reflect logos, symbolism, and brand identity elements. In doing so, a tie becomes more than fabric. It becomes an extension of the organization itself.

A ROOYMANS TIE: A TRIBUTE TO CRAFTSMANSHIP

Since the 1970s, Rooymans Neckwear has been a specialist in bespoke ties. We combine craftsmanship with creativity, tradition with innovation. From small batches to large-scale production, from subtle prints to woven jacquards. Every tie tells a story. And we make sure that story aligns perfectly with yours.
